Modern architecture – nestled in wild nature

For 120 years it towered over the Schächental: the art nouveau Hotel Klausenpasshöhe. The new Hotel Klausenpass is a few metres further down. It is impressive in a different way. There are the big window facades – wow, that view into the distance! And lots of daylight comes into the interior of the hotel.

The construction fits in perfectly with the landscape. It is an angular cube, concise, with clear lines. The main materials stone and wood take up elements of the surroundings: rock and the sparse high alpine vegetation. Yes, the Hotel Klausenpass is a real jewel of contemporary alpine architecture – realised by Linear Projekt AG, Stans.

Erna Schillig –
the important Urner artist

Erna Schillig (1900-1993), the daughter of Regina and Emanuel Schillig-Aschwanden, the owners of the Hotel Klausen-Passhöhe, spent the summer months there. In the cabin on the Balmalp, which belongs to the hotel, she got to know the painter August Babberger. She worked with him and became his student in Karlsruhe. Inspired by the Urner alpine landscapes, many paintings, pen-and-ink and pencil drawings, tapestries and plaster-technique murals were created.

August Babberger –
an Expressionist on the Klausenpass

The painter August Babberger (1885-1936) regularly spent summer stays on the Klausenpass from 1918 to 1936. A cabin on the Balmalp became the Karlsruhe Academy professor’s live-in studio and the world of the Urner mountains his second home. In dialogue with the pristine nature Babberger created expressive pictures and matured into an important representative of German Swiss Expressionism. In the 20s, Babberger’s cabin became a meeting place for likeminded artists such as Erna Schillig and Heinrich Danioth.

The «Urner Kreis» –
art in the landscape at the Klausenpass

In the summer of 1925, the young painter Heinrich Danioth (1896-1953) spent ten productive days in the landscape of the Klausenpass at the invitation of the Karlsruhe academy professor August Babberger. The cabin on the Balmalp used by Babberger and his companion and colleague Erna Schillig as an atelier henceforth became the meeting place of the «Urner Kreis», which also include such kindred spirits as Eduard Renner, Eugen Püntener and Albert Jütz.
